A beautiful example of the kind of Danish furnitur

A beautiful example of the kind of Danish furniture craftsmanship that rarely gets the attention it deserves.

This sculptural dining chair was made by an unknown Danish cabinetmaker probably 1960s, combining a solid beech frame with a beautifully contrasting teak backrest and seat.

The real magic is in the seat. Rather than being simply flat, the teak has been carefully formed and shaped to follow the contours of the seated body. The result is an exceptionally comfortable and surprisingly ergonomic sitting experience. Something you immediately notice when you take a seat.

Look closer and the craftsmanship becomes even more apparent. The elegantly shaped legs, carefully curved joints, sculpted edges and beautifully worked seat all reveal the amount of time and skill that went into making a chair like this. Nothing feels unnecessary, every curve and transition has a purpose.

The designer may have remained unknown, but the quality certainly did not.

The iconic four volumes edited by Grete Jalk, Danish Furniture Design Through 40 Years (1927-1966), stand as some of the most important publications ever produced on Danish modern furniture.

Published in the post-war period, these books document four decades of exceptional craftsmanship, innovation, and artistic vision within Danish furniture design. Under Grete Jalk’s authoritative editorial direction, the volumes present a carefully curated overview of the designers, cabinetmakers, and manufacturers who shaped Denmark’s international reputation for functional, human-centered modernism.

Richly illustrated with photographs, drawings, and technical details, the books go far beyond mere visual inspiration. They offer deep insight into materials, construction methods, and design philosophy, capturing the close collaboration between designer and craftsman that defines Danish furniture at its best.

A particularly beautiful and sought-after version

A particularly beautiful and sought-after version of Alvar Aalto’s iconic Savoy Vase, model 3031.

Designed in 1936, the vase was originally created for the Karhula-Iittala glassworks competition under the evocative name Eskimoerindens skinnbuxa, “The Eskimo Woman’s Leather Breeches”. The free-flowing, asymmetrical forms were a radical departure from the more traditional glassware of the time. The design was presented internationally at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition and later became known as the Savoy Vase, after the Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki, whose interior Aalto and his wife Aino designed.

Alvar Aalto was one of Finland’s most influential architects and designers. His work was deeply rooted in nature, human proportions and an intuitive approach to form. His architecture and furniture helped establish a distinctly Finnish interpretation of modernism. One where functionality and organic beauty could exist side by side.

This particular example is an especially refined and less commonly seen version. It is taller and has a more pronounced, flowing and irregular silhouette than many later examples, giving the vase an exceptionally elegant and sculptural character. Early Aalto vases are known for variations in proportion and form, partly reflecting their mouth-blown production.

Cowhorn chair by Danish furniture designer Knud Færch, produced by Slagelse Møbelværk.

Færch had a particular fascination with chairs, regarding them almost as sculptures. Furniture that could define an entire room while still offering the highest level of comfort. His designs are deeply rooted in his respect for wood and its natural, living qualities, resulting in sculptural forms that remain unmistakably Danish.

His passion for wood began early in life, spending time with his father in his cabinetmaking workshop and furniture shop. He later studied interior design, where a formative meeting with Finn Juhl, who taught furniture drawing, helped inspire Færch’s own career as a furniture designer during the 1950s and 60s.

The Cowhorn Chair is perhaps his most internationally recognized design. Its characteristic, organic form beautifully demonstrates Færch’s close relationship with wood. Transforming the material into a piece that feels almost carved rather than constructed.

This model features a teak backrest and an oak frame, beautifully highlighting the contrast between the two woods.

Very rare wall lamp designed by Sigvard Bernadotte

Very rare wall lamp designed by Sigvard Bernadotte and Acton Bjørn in the 1970s for Nordisk Solar.

Sigvard Bernadotte was not only an internationally recognised industrial designer, but also born a Prince of Sweden. He was the brother of Queen Ingrid of Denmark, making him the maternal uncle of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

The lamp is crafted in brass with an opal glass shade, combining a clean, sculptural form with the warm character of aged brass.

This particular example has a wonderful provenance. It was kept as a display model in a lighting shop that closed down in the early 1980s, and has therefore remained in exceptionally good vintage condition.

A wonderful weekend in Odsherred, where we celebrated our wedding anniversary at Lillero and, of course, hunted for vintage treasures, visited museums, and sampled local wine.

Five iconic Golden Bell pendants by Alvar Aalto, model A330S, produced by Louis Poulsen.

Crafted in brass with white lacquered interiors, this rare set comes from the same private home, where the lamps have been hanging since the early 1970s.

All five lamps are in good vintage condition, free from dents and showing only the expected signs of age and careful use. The white lacquered interiors remain clean and provide the warm, glare-free light that has made Aalto’s timeless design an enduring classic.

Over the decades, two of the pendants have developed a deeper brass patina than the other three, as they were installed in different rooms.

Designed in the early 1960s, the Kontrast pendant

Designed in the early 1960s, the Kontrast pendant is one of Poul Henningsen’s final lighting designs and a beautiful example of his lifelong fascination with shaping light rather than simply creating a lamp. Unlike his earlier multi-shade designs, the Kontrast features a sculptural arrangement of white lacquered metal shades combined with vibrant coloured reflectors hidden inside the fixture.

The name “Kontrast” refers to the deliberate contrast between the clean white exterior and the warm coloured inner reflectors. As the light passes through the different layers, it creates a subtle interplay of warm and cool tones, soft shadows and depth, transforming the atmosphere of a room while keeping the light source completely glare-free.

A unique feature of the Kontrast pendant is its adjustable lamp holder, allowing the light source to be positioned either higher or lower inside the fixture. This simple yet ingenious detail changes the way the coloured reflectors are illuminated, producing either a warmer, more intimate glow or a cooler, brighter light. Giving the user two distinct lighting experiences in a single design.

This perfectly reflects Henningsen’s philosophy that great lighting should be experienced rather than noticed.

A delightful quote from 1962, when the Kontrast lamp was introduced, was written by Poul Henningsen himself. After years of development, he humorously admits that the lamp had become “frightfully expensive,” noting that its retail price was 735 Danish kroner. He jokingly compares that to a quarter of a silver wedding anniversary (adding that one still has to pay for the wine), before apologising for not being able to make it any cheaper and concluding that true craftsmanship simply comes at a price. He signs off with his characteristic wit: “Kind regards – and sorry. PH.”

This example is in excellent vintage condition, showing only minimal age-related wear.

A rare pair of “Filur” outdoor wall lamps prod

A rare pair of “Filur” outdoor wall lamps produced by LYFA in Denmark during the 1980s.

With their sculptural, flowing silhouette, galvanized steel construction and softly diffused white opaline glass shades, the Filur is a beautiful example of Danish outdoor lighting from the period. Functional yet expressive, the design has a distinctive architectural presence whether illuminated or not.

Both lamps are in outstanding vintage condition and retain their original Lyfa manufacturer labels.
